Vocal fold paralysis is a disorder that can be seen at any age, affecting different functions of the larynx at various levels. The clinical picture depends on whether the problem is unilateral or bi- lateral and the age of the patient. In general, respiratory symptoms in bilateral paralysis and voice symp- toms in unilateral paralysis are in the foreground, but symptoms and findings of respiratory failure determine the clinical picture in the pediatric age group. For this reason, the possibility of vocal fold paralysis in newborns and older children should be considered in the presence of respiratory failure, the necessary diagnostic methods should be used, and the treatment should be planned accordingly.
In this review article, the symptoms and signs, etiology, diagnosis, and treatment methods of unilateral or bilateral vocal fold paralysis in children will be discussed.
Vokal kord paralizileri larinksin farklı fonksiyonlarını çeşitli derecelerde etkileyen, her yaşta gö- rülebilen bozukluklardır. Klinik tablo, problemin tek veya iki taraflı olmasına ve hastanın yaşına göre de- ğişir. Genel olarak iki taraflı paralizilerde solunumla, tek taraflı paralizilerde sesle ilgili belirtiler ön planda olmakla birlikte, pediyatrik yaş grubunda hemen her zaman solunum yetersizliğine ait semp- tomlar ve bulgular klinik tabloyu belirler. Bu nedenle yenidoğanlarda ve daha büyük çocuklarda solu- num yetersizliği tablosu karşısında vokal kord paralizisi ihtimali düşünülmeli, bunun için gerekli tanı yöntemleri kullanılmalı ve tedavi ona göre planlanmalıdır. Bu gözden geçirme makalesinde çocuklarda görülen tek veya iki taraflı vokal kord paralizilerinin semptomları ve bulguları, etiyolojisi, tanı ve tedavi yöntemleri tartışılacaktır.
