Since the radioactivity was discovered, the production of new shielding materials has always been important with also increasing energy demand of the present century. In this book, it is aimed to determine the radioactive shielding properties of some natural materials which could be alternative to the standard shielding materials used in the field of radiation protection. All physical parameters related to radiation shielding are presented along with the basic theoretical background. In each item, we have tried to use an approximation that makes the essential physics clearest to the readers. Both experimental and theoretical aspects are given in detail by expecting that the book will be a reference book for the radiation protection from gamma rays. The most basic conceptual elements of radioactivity together with the historical development of technology in this field are given in INTRODUCTION of the book. In chapter two the fundamental PHYSICAL BACKGROUND determining the types of radiation and the valid conceptual rules of interaction of radiation with matter are presented. The third chapter is organized as MATERIAL AND METHOD devoting the radiation absorption properties of pure and boron-mixed vermiculite samples. It also contains the method used to facilitate and design the experiments to obtain the results. All results calculated from theoretical and experimental aspects along with those of some other standard materials like borosilicate, concrete, lead and granite are given in the fourth chapter entitled RESULTS AND DISCUSSION. The last chapter includes CONCLUSION about the new materials studied under the view of present work.
