Achiral and chiral separations using polymeric surfactants in mixed-mode Open-Tubular Capillary Electrochromatography

Abstract

A combination of Open-Tubular Capillary Electrochromatography (OT-CEC) using Polyelectrolyte Multilayers (PEM) and Micellar Electrochromatography (MEKC) was used to optimize the separation of achiral and chiral benzodiazepines. The polymer, poly-(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), was used as the cationic layer in the PEM coating and various polymeric surfactants (poly-sodium olel-L-leucylvalinate), poly-sodium undecylenic-L-leucine and poly-sodium undecylenic-L-valine) were used as the anionic layer. Also, these anionic polymeric surfactants were used in the running buffer. Optimal experimental conditions (i.e., voltage and temperature) were determined and corresponding peak efficiencies compared. Enantiomeric resolution of the analytes varied depending upon the polymeric surfactant employed and optimized conditions. Results from each polymeric surfactant were compared and discussed.
