Receiving his PhD on “Turkey and International Society from a Critical Legal Perspective” in 1994 from the University of Glasgow, Prof. Berdal Aral has concentrated on international law and human rights in both of his classes as well as his research. He has written four books in Turkish: Uluslararası Hukukta Meşru Müdafaa Hakkı (1999, Self-Defence in International Law), Üçüncü Kuşak İnsan Hakları Olarak Kolektif Haklar (2010, Collective Rights as Third-Generation Human Rights), Küresel Güvenlikten Küresel Tahakküme: BM Güvenlik Sistemi ve İslam Dünyası (2016, From Global Security to Global Hegemony: UN Security System and the Muslim World), and Bitmeyen İhanet: Emperyalizmin Gölgesinde Filistin Sorunu ve Uluslararası Hukuk (2019, Perpetual Betrayal: the Palestinian Problem and International Law under Imperialism’s Shadow). Additionally, he has numerous articles published in Turkish and English on international law, human rights as well as on Turkey’s foreign policy.
